India's 21st Century Pushpak 'Viman,' or Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), represents a significant advancement in the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) efforts to make space access more affordable and sustainable. This vehicle is inspired by the mythological Pushpak Vimana from the Ramayana and is designed to perform similar functions to the American Space Shuttle.
The Pushpak Viman is part of ISRO's RLV program, which aims to reduce the cost of launching payloads into space by 80%, bringing it down to $500-$1,000 per kilogram. This is achieved through the development of recoverable and reusable systems and efficient propulsion technologies such as air-breathing scramjet engines
Key milestones in the development of Pushpak include the successful execution of landing experiments, such as the RLV-TD HEX-01 in 2016 and the more recent LEX-02 in March 2024. During these tests, the vehicle was autonomously guided to a runway landing after being released from a helicopter, demonstrating its capability to handle off-nominal conditions and perform precise autonomous landings
The RLV's design includes heat-resistant materials to survive re-entry, advanced navigation and control systems, and innovative landing gear for safe touchdowns. Future plans involve scaling up the vehicle for orbital missions and incorporating technologies like scramjet propulsion for even greater efficiency
These advancements mark a significant step for ISRO in democratizing space access and enhancing India's capabilities in space exploration and satellite deployment.
ISRO plans to further develop the Pushpak Viman through a series of experimental flights, including the Orbital Return Flight Experiment (OREX) and the Scramjet Propulsion Experiment (SPEX). The goal is to eventually scale up the vehicle to serve as a two-stage orbital launch vehicle capable of carrying payloads to various orbits efficiently .
The Pushpak Viman is expected to play a pivotal role in making space exploration more affordable and sustainable, positioning India as a key player in global space technology advancements
