Qualcomm recently introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip with its FastConnect 7900 connectivity platform, bringing significant improvements to Android phones in both AI and performance. This new FastConnect 7900 platform was expected to include ultra-wideband (UWB) support alongside Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, allowing manufacturers to use a single chip for all three features. In the past, FastConnect only supported Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so companies had to add a separate UWB module if they wanted this technology. Brands like Samsung have been doing this for years, but many manufacturers avoid it due to extra costs and space requirements.
UWB is a short-range wireless technology that provides precise location tracking, enhancing features like digital car keys, file sharing with nearby devices, and casting to tablets. Apple's AirTags use UWB for accurate item locating, a feature Google's Find My Device network currently lacks but plans to support soon. Unfortunately, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite could make UWB more common, many upcoming flagship Android phones may skip UWB to keep costs down.
