OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5-Codex, a major upgrade to its AI coding assistant. Unlike earlier models, GPT-5-Codex can dynamically adjust how much “thinking time” it spends on a task, from just a few seconds to as long as seven hours. This flexibility boosts its performance on benchmarks like SWE-bench Verified and large-scale code refactoring.

The new model is already available in Codex products via terminal, IDEs, GitHub, and ChatGPT for Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise users, with API access coming soon.

OpenAI says GPT-5-Codex also improves at code reviews, generating fewer incorrect suggestions while offering more impactful feedback. With the growing competition from tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, this move strengthens Codex’s position in the crowded AI coding market.

💡 What do you think 🤔 will GPT-5-Codex become the go-to AI coding partner for developers?
