Today I want to share something really exciting how to take Milky Way photos with just a phone.

Taking photos of the Milky Way isn’t easy. You need a phone that’s great in low light and can handle Manual (Pro) Mode. I used the award-winning vivo X70 Pro+, and it made this shot possible.

The Story Behind the Photo.

This was in July 2022, at my friend’s house near Inle Lake, Myanmar. Around 11 PM, I went outside (to use the toilet in our region, toilets are separate from the house 😅). When I looked up, the Milky Way was shining so clearly above me that I couldn’t resist. I quickly set up my phone and that’s how this photo happened. Sometimes the best photos come from unexpected moments.

📷 Requirements for Milky Way Photos

1. A night when the Milky Way is visible

2. A location with zero or very little light pollution

3. No clouds, no moonlight

4. A tripod (super important)

5. A phone with Manual (Pro) Mode

📷 My Step-by-Step Shooting Settings

1. Mount your phone on a tripod and keep it perfectly still

2. Use Manual (Pro) Mode (If you get Raw, use it)

3. Set shutter speed 25s (longer = star trails)

4. Use ISO 1600–3200

5. Set focus to Manual → Infinity

6. Use a timer to avoid shaking

Pro Tip:

If you go over 25s shutter speed, stars turn into lines (Star Trails). Beautiful too, but not the Milky Way style. A bit of noise at high ISO is fine it even feels like extra stars in the photo.

This Milky Way photo is one of my personal favorites, and it has even won awards in mobile photography contests. I wanted to share it because yes, it’s possible to capture the Milky Way with just a phone.
