Every year, the small coastal town of Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu transforms into a grand stage of faith, colors, and culture during Dassara. Unlike anywhere else in India, here the celebrations are centered around the Sri Mutharamman Temple, where lakhs of devotees gather.
🔸 What makes it special?
Devotees dress up as gods, goddesses, kings, and even village folk characters, offering their “Nava Durga” prayers in unique disguises. It’s believed that surrendering the ego through these costumes pleases the Goddess.
🔸 The highlight – Soorasamharam
The festival culminates in a powerful enactment of Goddess Durga slaying the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
🔸 Beyond devotion
Kulasai Dassara is also a vibrant celebration of folk art, music, and storytelling—a living example of how faith and culture weave together.
🌊 With the temple facing the sea, the festival carries an energy that is raw, intense, and deeply spiritual—making it a must-experience for those who seek both tradition and spectacle.
🙏✨ This Dassara, may the spirit of Kulasai remind us of strength, surrender, and the triumph of good.
